The Los Angeles Dodgers have won eight straight after defeating the Washington Nationals 5-3 on Saturday. AJ Pollock hit an RBI-single that put the Dodgers ahead in the sixth inning and LA went on to defeat the Nationals. Los Angeles is 52-31 and trails the first place San Francisco Giants in the National League West by just a half-game. Los Angeles has the best team ERA in all of baseball. Injuries have taken their toll on the Dodgers and Los Angeles will play without Scott Alexander, Trevor Bauer, Caleb Ferguson, Tommy Kahnle, Dustin May, Edwin Rios, Corey Seager and Yoshitomo Tsutsugo.
Miami can’t find any sense of consistency as the Marlins have alternated between wins and losses in each of the last four games and are mired in last place in the National League East 8 ½ games behind the division-leading New York Mets. Miami is 35-46 following a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Garrett Cooper hit a home run and knocked in two runs, while Sandy Alcantara threw six solid innings on the mound for the Marlins. Miami has the best team ERA in baseball but is 28th in runs scored and slugging percentage. Brian Anderson, Jeff Brigham, Daniel Castano, Jose Devers, Jorge Guzman, and Elieser Hernandez are all out for Miami, while Jazz Chisholm is questionable
Dodgers Have Baseball’s Best ERA
One of the biggest reasons that Los Angeles is riding an eight-game winning streak is the Dodgers pitching staff. During the current winning streak, Los Angeles is allowing an average of 2.25 runs per game. The Dodgers have the best team ERA in baseball at 3.16 and the second best WHIP at 1.11. The starting rotation for Los Angeles has the most Quality Starts in baseball with 49 and opposing hitters are averaging only .210 at the plate against LA pitching which is also first in baseball. Julio Urias has 10 victories to lead Los Angeles. The Dodgers will hand the ball to Walker Buehler on Monday. The right-hander owns the best ERA for starters at 2.35 and this season is 8-1 with 101 strikeouts.
At the plate, The Dodgers are 12th in team batting average at .239, 9th in slugging percentage at .411 and have scored the third-most runs with 423. Max Muncy has 18 home runs and 44 RBIs to lead the Dodgers in those two categories. Justin Turner has had a strong season thus far with 14 doubles, 13 home runs and is 3rd in RBIs with 41. In 83 games this season, the Dodgers have hit 107 home runs as well as 122 doubles and 15 triples.
Marlins need more punch at the plate
One of the biggest reasons the Miami Marlins are last in the National League East is a lack of punch at the plate. Miami has scored only 318 runs this season which is 28th in baseball and the Marlins slugging percentage is also 28th at .369, while Miami has the 22nd best team batting average at .231. Jesus Aguilar has 70 hits to lead the Marlins, while left fielder Adam Duvall has supplied what little power Miami has had this season with a team best 18 home runs. Duvall is also the leader in RBIs with 56 while Aguilar is a close second with 51. In 81 games played, the Marlins have hit only 77 home runs.
The Miami pitching staff has performed very well this season. The Marlins have the 5th best team ERA in baseball at 3.34, the sixth best WHIP at 1.17 and opposing hitters are averaging only .225 at the plate against the Marlins pitching which is seventh best. Miami’s top pitcher through the first half of the season Trevor Rogers will be on the mound Monday. Rogers leads Miami in wins with seven, strikeouts with 110 and ERA at 2.14. This season the left-hander is 7-5.
