The Carolina Panthers travel to Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday afternoon to officially start their preseason schedule against the Indianapolis Colts. This is going to be a fun matchup as two teams want to take the next step with a new quarterback under center and an inexperienced head coach. Carolina comes from a third-place finish in NFC South last season when they finished with a 5-11 record. The Indianapolis Colts finished second in the AFC South with an 11-5 record and were one of the AFC Wild Card teams.

There are many stories heading into this game and we will touch on some of the big ones, but this is a great chance to see some depth. Let’s take a closer look at both the Panthers and Colts to decide where our game should be placed.

Development of some talented guys

This Carolina Panthers offense is going to look completely different than it did last season, as laid-back Christian McCaffrey is recovering and they switched to quarterback Sam Darnold to be the starter. However, there is a lot of inexperience in the wide receiver space right now after DJ Moore and Robby Anderson. Carolina drafted Terrace Marshall Jr. in the second round from LSU and Shi Smith from South Carolina in the sixth round. They will need depth on the receiver position, so this will be a great chance to show off towards a pretty good secondary. The Panthers also drafted back on an ongoing basis Chuba Hubbard from Oklahoma State in the fourth round to help the backcourt. He finished last season with 133 attempts on 625 rushing yards with five touchdowns in his junior season.

The defensive side of football is exciting, as well as the secondary seemed to improve as they finished 18th in pass defense last season. The front office decided to improve there when Carolina drafted cornerback Jaycee Horn to be a starting player as soon as the first snap from scrimmage happens. Being helped by veterans like Hasson Reddick and AJ Bouye (not including his father as former player Joe Horn) will definitely help improve the defensive looks of the Panthers.

Who’s under the center?

The Indianapolis Colts have a big concern about who will be under center when opening day when they traded for Carson Wentz in the offseason. However, Wentz went down during training camp with a foot injury that required surgery that would put him on the shelf for 5-12 weeks. The other quarterbacks on the roster are Jacob Eason, Sam Ehlinger, and Brett Hundley, and it looks like Ehlinger has taken the early lead as he continues to get first-team representatives in training. Ehlinger had a solid senior season in Texas as he finished with a 60.2 completion percentage for 2,566 yards with 26 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Watching the quarterback fight after the question mark under the middle was anything but probably the most exciting thing to start the preseason.

On the defensive side of football, the most exciting thing is to look after the defensive end of the first half Kwity Paye. The Colts have listed him as one of the starting defensive ends in their 4-3 defense, and his presence on the defensive line can be a huge addition. Indianapolis were second with 12th overall sacks last season and had an opposing quarterback rating of 90.5, so they add a pretty decent defense. If the Colts can play a good defense this season, they should be able to catch somewhere after the season this season.
