The Orioles have lost three in a row and in the opening game of an AL East series host a Blue Jays team that is coming off a loss.

The Blue Jays had won two in a row before losing their last game. The team is four games over .500 but has some work to do to get back in the AL East race 8.5 games back of the first-place Tampa Bay Rays, who they faced in their last series. Toronto is balanced and ranks fourth in the Majors in runs scored but their lineup did not do much in their last game.

The Orioles have lost three in a row and in a recent series on the road lost three of four games facing the Blue Jays. The club has the fewest wins in the AL and second-fewest wins in baseball and are 25.5 games out of first place in the AL East. Baltimore’s staff ranks dead last in the Majors in team ERA.

Lineup Quiets Down

After winning two games against where they scored 17 runs the Blue Jays lineup quieted down in their last game in a 5-1 loss to the Rays. In that game the club only had six hits and Randal Grichuk accounted for the lone RBI with a solo shot for his 15th HR of the season.

Grichuk ranks second in the Jays in RBI and in the recent series against the Orioles he had five hits and five RBI. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (.336 27 HR 69 RBI) leads the Majors in RBI and ranks second in HR and he tore up the Orioles in the four-game set in late June with two HR and six RBI. On the season Toronto is 24-19 on the road.

Steven Matz (7-3 4.60 ERA 1.37 WHIP) takes the hill in this series opener and in his last start he was not sharp giving up four runs on five hits in only 2 2/3 innings in a 9-7 extra inning loss to the Seattle Mariners. The Blue Jays have lost three of his last four starts where in all the losses he gave up four runs. This will be Matz’s first start of the season against the Orioles.

Giving the Broom and then Getting It

After a surprising three-game road sweep of the Houston Astros the Orioles were swept in their last series losing three on the road against the L.A. Angels. In their last game they lost the finale to the Halos 6-5 where after Cedric Mullins tied the game in the ninth inning with a solo HR the Baltimore bullpen lost it giving up two runs in the bottom of the inning. The club ranks 20th in the Majors in runs scored and Mullins leads the team batting .318. Trey Mancini (.254 15 HR 53 RBI) leads the team in HR and RBI, but his batting average has dropped 30 points since the beginning of June and he only had one hit in the recent four-game set with Toronto. On the season Baltimore has the worst home record (12-26) in baseball.

As of Tuesday morning, a starter has not been named for this game. In losing three of four games in the late June four-game series with the Blue Jays the Orioles were outscored 31-12.
